When will 2021 UTME registration commence?

It's the question on the lips of many students who plan on taking the 2021 Unified Tertiary matriculation examination. Below are the details we have gathered from trusted news sources as regards the commencement of the registration for the 2021 UTME.
Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is yet to make official statement on the date for the 2021 UTME registration. Remember that unlike other past years which by this month the registrations were already concluded, this year is perculiar with the effects of the Covid -19 pandemic which has adversely distorted the normal flow of the academic calendar.
However, the board urged the public not to pay attention to the Tweet put out by an account not managed by JAMB stating the date of the start of the registration which is misleading many.

The report of this was released by Punch newspaper, see below how Punch released the statement

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC.

This is to inform the public that no date has been fixed for 2021 UTME registration. Kindly disregard any tweet from a fake account that stated otherwise. The  public will be duly informed when the date is fixed. Thank you,” the examination board said.

The

Meanwhile, JAMB, on Sunday, set out June 15th, 2021 as deadline for admissions in the nation's tertiary institutions for the 2020/2021 academic session.

This was contained in a statement issued by the spokesperson for JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, which reveals that the decision was collectively taken at a virtual meeting with heads of tertiary institutions in the country on Wednesday, February 24 2021. As also reported by Punch newspaper Benjamin still added that after a robust and insightful deliberation, members collectively agreed that all public universities are expected to finish their admissions on or before May 15, 2021, while the private Universities and all IEIs, Polytechnics and COEs would complete theirs at the agreed date of June 15, 2021.

Give me a PAGE! (poem)

Give me a page please let me write of these long concealed in my heart
Let me write of my ladder builders
those who never gave up in me, helping me see beyond an eagle's sight

Give me a page please let me write of this era and tell of an illness that ravaged the world making us  mask like ekpo of Calabar

Give me a page for I will write of the sorrows of Racism and tell the world that no colour is older than the other
In this page I will tell of a damsel who was taken by force and her sealed gate broken as she mourns her wasted years of this concealment
for now her first union was lost to the unknown

Please give me a page and let me tell the unborn that moonlights were once  more seducing than cartoons, that "Ikorodo Nsukka" has lasted longer than "Shoki" and that our "Palmi"has lasted longer than "Ever"  wine

Please just give me a page and my hands shall never rest in telling of these, these things so they'll last till a "Coons" age!

The ALMAJIRI (poem)

Today I took a voyage
Today I left my comfort zone, crossed the boundaries of tribal pride, broke the walls of ethnicity to see that boy, that young Almajiri whose dreams he has swallowed
Who lies on the throne of anything for the boys

He said he's raised in the houses of no roofs
In the kitchen of no food
In the palour of no Tele
But only this plate of arm seeking and the lingering thirst to stand with these fellow

He knows not the harmattan for he swims naked in its haze
His bud is gone, the bud to the sweet and sour
He knows not the room, the open room to the white man's wisdom
The trendy and feudal he knows not
If only this day and each day is spent on one meal he grins like the Cheshire cat
Abba Father, do I deserve more than these?

JAMB to redress admission process for COEs

The registrar of JAMB Prof. Ishaq Oloyede has warned provosts of Colleges of Education against what he referred as illegal admission while in a three-day stakeholders summit on repositioning Colleges of Education in Nigeria for better performance.

According to a news report by the popular Voice of Nigeria, the Registrar, Joint Admission and matriculation Board Professor Oloyede  at a three-day Stakeholders Summit on Repositioning the Colleges of Education for improved efficiency and effectiveness called for the cancellation of Mathematics as requirement for candidates who sought admission for Arts and Humanity courses into Colleges of Education (COEs).

” The major issue and the problem is systemic because if you require an applicant to have mathematics and physics to study study Yoruba, Hausa, Igho or Arabic, I think that is the problem.

” We need to be realistic about issues of prerequisite”

That same source also gathered that Professor Oloyede called for genuine implementation of reward system that would be favourable to all teachers.

He identified implementation as a major challenge as he emphasised on the place of proper coordination of policies to prevent counter productivity.

” A lot of steps has been taken towards enhancement of the teaching profession. I look forward to actualisation of those steps. I believe that teachers are in this condition because of the reward system and the reward system is unfavourable to the teachers partly because of the huge numbers of teachers involved. If we can genuinely raise a reward system for teachers, a number of steps have been announced by Federal Government .

” If those steps are actualised and adequately implemented, there will be problem in implementation because it will generate another raise to 70 years”

He adds, according to the same "Voice of Nigeria" that what was required was to coordinate and refine the implementation process to avoid counter productivity.

Over 700,000 WASSCE results not released in Kano Nigeria?

Tukur Muntari,  Kano

Not less than 70,000 candidates who sat for the Senior School Certificate Examination October/November 2020 in Kano are yet to see their results.

According to a news report by Punch, WAEC in January 2021 released results of 1,209,992 candidates that took the examination across the country.

According to WAEC, 894,101 candidates scored credits in English and Mathematics.

Punch also added, however, WAEC refused to release the results of more than 70,000 candidates sponsored by the Kano State Government following the inability of the government to settle the registration fees of the affected candidates.

A reliable source at the WAEC headquarters told The PUNCH in Kano on Tuesday that the state government are yet to pay the outstanding registration fees running into millions of naira.

“The examination body has decided to hold on to the results until when the Kano state government settles the registration fees. WAEC has released results of private candidates, but candidates sponsored by the state government will not be released until payment is made,” the source said.

Meanwhile, the issue has generated public outcry, especially among parents who lamented that the withheld results had demoralised their children.

The state Commissioner for Education, Sanusi Kiru, said he had earlier commented on the issue.

“I have already said what I wanted to say on the issue. I will send you audio recording of what I said on the issue,” Kiru said.

PUNCH said that as of the time of filing this report, the commissioner has yet to send the audio recording or call back, says Punch.

Tips to effective PUBLIC SPEAKING: you will never fear the stage after applying these!

Primarily stage fright is caused by lack of confidence, being unprepared for your speech or other stage performance and fearing that you would gain the antagonism of the audience.

For a clearer understanding of what your body goes through during stage fright let us look at stage fright as a psychological reaction. When your body is presented with stimulus it's reaction is either excitement or fear. This act triggers the secretion of a bodily hormone known as the adrenaline. The function of the adrenaline is to provide energy to the body in order to give a flight or fight response to the stimulus. When this hormone gets into the blood stream it produces Side effects like, stomach ache, shortness of breath, due to the constriction of the throat, shaking, vomiting, shaking hands, trembling etc

To learn more on stage fright and the stages of stage fright, do not fail to visit my first post on stage fright. Now let's focus on how to overcome stage fright even to the extent of averting them to your strength.

HOW TO OVERCOME STAGE FRIGHT

We are going to look at 5 basic ways of overcoming stage fright:

1. RELAXATION , a relaxed mind ease tension, so relaxation is a good way to overcome stage anxiety. Learn some techniques like hypnosis and biofeedback.

2. EXERCISE, do your normal exercise before going to the venue you would perform. Rub hands to pass on nervousness

3. BREATHING, exhale then inhale slowly at least for 25 times before you climb your stage. This will reduce fast heart beats, a symptom of stage fright.

4. PRACTICE, practice they say makes perfect, so make a goal to rehearse many times before going to the stage. Call friends who are good at what you will do on the stage i.e either speech or acting etc, ask for their observations and corrections, remember it is better to fail a million times during rehearsal than once when you're actually performing on the stage before your audience.

5. DIET, avoid drinking coffee ,tea or any carbornated beverage to avoid burping while on the stage, that can be embarrassing and causes many to loose focus while on stage.

Drink water before the performance and take sips of water to prevent drying of the mouth.

NOTE: Don't drink too much much water within the first 30 seconds before your performance to avoid wash room.

Now that you have known how to overcome stage fright, let's now look at how to be a good motivational speaker, an impressive one.

SKILLS FOR MOTIVATIONAL SPEECH

1. Try to understand the make up of your audience, are you going to address a group of young adults, children, or older people that will definitely guide your use of words and body language. Always have your audience in mind when preparing for speech.

2. The first 90 seconds of your speech can be very crucial, it is this time that you either gain the attention of your audience or loose it.

So start with a quote, phrase or example your listeners can testify to. Be very enthusiastic about what your saying, remember while on the stage you are the teacher of everyone in the audience so never feel timid. Speak with boldness, be the master of your stage, but please avoid over enthusiasm that can make your speech look so mechanical, so flexibility is the key word here!

3. Get your audience connected with positive impression. Do not destroy the sentiments of your listeners, see tactful ways to drive home your point but without reducing their excitements about your topic.

4. Use body language effectively. Researchers say that 93% of lasting impression is more directly tired to our voice and body language.

So it doesn't matter necessarily what you say but how you say it matters most. Pausing shortly at intervals is often a good way to make points sink down into the minds of your listeners, remember the orator of Umuofia in Chinue Achebe's things fall apart, he often pauses while speaking to allow his community show their deep feelings. So little silence can convey ideas you may not be able to.

5. Maintain good eye contact and body posture, your eyes plays very important role in communication, eyes can be used to convey the speakers feeling about his topic. Though many suggest looking above the heads of your audience as a way of calming stage anxiety, it is more effective when you look at your audience as individuals not even as a group, so the former is wrong, a pitfall you should always avoid.

Make good use of your hands, body gestures to express your point. I can personally relate to the former president of the United States of America Barak Obama as being very effective in this , you can download any of his speech to see for yourself.

6. Never derail from your main point, a good speech is like a pencil, it must have a point. You can use good vocabularies, photographs, fliers etc to make your main points stand out.

When your done speaking it's good you give a memorable conclusion, remember that what is said last is remembered first, so your last words might be what your audience remembers years after you have spoken to them. Dike Chukwumerije a Nigerian spoken words poet is a very good public speaker I will also advise you try searching for one of his speeches online.

DONT'S FOR EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING

1. Don't look down or off where there are no people

2. Don't speak unless you have reached the front of the stage

3. Don't play with your hair or sway from side to side

4. Don't point with the finger instead use open palm

5. Don't fold your arms, and never turn your back to your audience.

I strongly believe that in applying all this , your next speech will be with loads of CONFIDENCE.

SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION: Are you falling victim?

Have you ever used the social media as a tool for positive change? If yes, be assured that you are among millions who truly understand the benefits of social media which of course are innumerable. In Nigeria for instance the ICT contributes 13% of Nigeria's GDP (gross domestic product) according to the National Bereau of Statistics (NBS) and ICT as we know does not exempt the social media. Also the world in general has become a global village through the use of social media. An estimated 3.5 billion people in the world use the social media. But sadly many of these have submerged themselves in the platform that they became addicted to it, no wonder a recent survey by the Royal Society for Public Health in the United Kingdom, proved social media to be more addictive than Cigarettes and alcohol, imagine if you smoked as much as you checked your feed.

According to "Addiction Center" an online page, social media addiction is a behavioral addiction that is defined by being overly concerned about social media, driven by an uncontrollable urge to log on to social media, devoting so much time on it that it impairs other life areas. Examples of social media platforms include, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter, WeChat, Imo etc.

SYMPTOMS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION
The following can help you detect if you are falling/ have fallen victim to social media addiction
1. Euphoric feeling when about to use the social media
2. Little or no sense of time
3. Isolation, defensiveness and agitation
4. Headaches/ backaches due to long stay on your device
5. Blurred or strained vision.
Also ask yourself, have you made repeated but unsuccessful attempts to cut back/control your use of the social media?
Does social media serve as an escape from problems or relief from bad mood?
If any of the above had once happened to you, that would not necessarily mean that you are a social media addict , but check if they have persisted or turned chronic, if so then you need to watch out.

NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION
A. Poor sleep: most social media addicts spend long hours in the use of social media and often are unable to pass through the REM (rapid eye movement, or dream ) sleep and the non-REM (or non dream sleep) in the night, essential for good mental health and alertness in the day.
B. Accidents : it could be domestic accidents or otherwise, in any case addiction to social media could cause this. Think of a driver who quickly wants to reply to a conversation on his Facebook handle, he might from there see important notifications that he so much values and wants to quickly check out as well, but before long he would be taken unawares by how quick he gets into danger.
C. Think of this, Neuroscientists have compared social media interactions to a syringe of dopamine being injected straight into the system. Dopamines are hormones that affects the brain's reward areas, such triggering the same kind of chemical reaction as hard drugs like Cocaine, just imagine that!
And on the estimate 27% of children who spend 3 or more hours a day on social media exhibit symptoms of poor mental health. Just see how negative social media addiction can be!

TREATMENT/SOLUTION
1. Antidepressants and anti- anxiety drugs such as Escitalopram is drug option proven effective for internet addiction according to studies by Mount Sinai School of medicine. But remember that  medications must be administered by a health professional, it could also have adverse side effects. And this page does not recommend medications either, readers discretion is required.
2. Digital detox: reduce dependency on social media by restoring or increasing your focus on social interactions in the physical world.
If non of these methods proves effective please seek help from professionals trained to rehabilitate addicts .
Clearly though determination and self discipline is needed to help you fight and break free from social media addiction.
